Risk Analysis

LPI evaluates the risk to your site, including contents, assets and occupants, then provides recommendations on the best lightning protection solutions.

What it is

From assessment to action

A lightning risk assessment (LRA) determines whether a site and its surroundings are at risk of direct and indirect strikes, and whether a protection system is needed to mitigate risks to assets and personnel.

Why it matters

LPI has a proven history of working with diversified industry groups to evaluate lightning protection and provide recommendations that are cost-effective, practical, and successful.

The Australian Standard for Lightning Protection, AS 1768:2021, outlines requirements for protecting buildings, facilities and sites and includes a useful risk assessment tool that compares calculated risk to a tolerable threshold.

Beyond the calculator

The standard notes that protection measures might still be warranted even when the calculation deems them unnecessary. Our engineers apply this judgement by drawing on decades of field experience across the most lightning-prone regions in the world.

What we evaluate

Five inputs into every risk assessment

Each LRA draws on site visits, measurement and engineering judgement. Nothing is assumed. Every input is specific to your facility.

Layout, Environment and Lightning Ground Flash Density

Dimensions, Assets, Personnel Activities, and Hazard Review

Test and Measurement – Bonding, Earthing and Interconnectivity

Services in/out of the site

Determination of Potential Losses

How we help

A four-step engagement

A clear, predictable process that can be easily scaled from a single building to multi-site projects.

Brief & scope

We review drawings, services, exposure and operational context.

Site survey

On-site measurement of existing earthing, bonding and interconnectivity, and supplemented by soil and environmental data.

Risk calculation

Quantitative analysis comparing calculated risk to tolerable thresholds, with qualitative engineering overlay where required.

Report & recommend

We provide a cost-effective set of recommendations for direct strike, surge, earthing & personnel protection.
